Smiths celebrate 70th wedding anniversary at Hearthstone

Seventy years seems like an eternity for most of us, but for Russ and Leota Smith seventy years is a dedication of their love for one another.  At a recent celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary as told by Russ their story begins at the Iowa State Fair.  Russ had been showing a calf and Leota was showing some of her grandmothers’ crafts.  His calf may not have won, but he had just met the love of his life.  They spent a lot of time together that summer then Russ moved to Philadelphia to work for an ice cream company and Leota was busy furthering her education, majoring in business.  Although they were separated by many miles Russ proposed.  Without a doubt, they knew they were perfect for each other.

They were married in 1938 and moved to Northern California to start a dairy plant.  Russ had become a soldier in the United States Army and was waiting to get called into combat.  One day before he was to be deployed, the war was declared over.  In their seventy years together they have traveled all over the country for business opportunities.  Russ said “Leota always stood beside everything I did, she never complained once.”  In the 1960’s Russ managed the Borden Milk Plant which is now the Clausen Pickles factory. Russ and Leota currently reside at Hearthstone Manor Senior Living Community in Woodstock. They have raised three sons who have given them six grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Hearthstone Village Celebrates Father’s Day with Andy Talley

Hearthstone Village residents, families and guests were regaled with tales of fur trading in the 1800’s by Andy Talley, of the McHenry County Conservation District. Talley quickly transformed, into “Andre St. Pierre”, the character he uses to bring his audience into the life and times of a long ago era. Guests smiled while Talley spun tales and told humorous stories that brought history to life. Guests Bob and Marie Iversen from Woodstock stated they were thrilled with the program and thought that Mr. Talley was very entertaining. “We would love to hear him speak again.” After the performance, Talley stayed to chat with the guests, discuss history and display his authentic memorabilia.
